Incoming Students

We are pleased to offer our students the world and we are happy to welcome the world to our faculty.

This web page answers many of your questions about how to apply to study at the Faculty of Economics, Chulalongkorn University as a fee-paying visiting undergraduate student (if your home institution is not one of our partner institutions) and how to prepare for your stay. Should we have an exchange agreement with your home institution, you may study at the Faculty of Economics, Chulalongkorn University as an exchange student.Further information for exchange students is available here.

Application

  • Admission requirements
    • Non-native speakers of English must have a TOEFL score of at least 79 points (Internet-bases) or 213 points (computer-based) or IELTS 6.5 points.
    • You must have a good academic record.
    • You must assume payment of tuition amounting to THB 102,990 per regular term and THB 51,190 per summer term.
    • You must assume the cost of travel, housing, health insurance and other expenses.

  • Application deadlines

  • Acceptance
    • If your application is successful, acceptance letters and pre-arrival information will be provided on the online exchange portal around two months after the application deadline. Acceptance letters will only be sent by email upon request.

Academic Information

  • Workload
    • The maximum workload is 22 credits in a regular semester and 7 credits in the summer.

  • Course selection
    • A list of courses available for incoming undergraduate visiting students in the current academic year, including course descriptions, can be viewed here. All of these courses are entirely taught in English. Some courses have pre-requisites.
      Course syllabi can be accessed through the online exchange portal. Please note that it is up to your home institution to decide if you will be able to transfer credits earned back. Determining course equivalency may require some time and you should consult your study adviser well in advance.

  • Registration
    • Exchange students will receive an email with enrollment instructions, requiring them to enroll at Chulalongkorn University before the semester begins. This enrollment is necessary to register for courses online via the university’s Office of the Registrar website.

  • Fee
    • Visiting students have to pay a tuition fee as follows:

  • Credit structure
    • Chulalongkorn University employs a credit structure for the courses which make up a programme. One credit is equivalent to 14 lecture hours per term. An allocation of 3-0-6 for a semester-based unit for example means that the course in question requires 3 lecture hours, no tutorial hours and 6 hours of self-study per week.

Practical Information

  • Health
    • We advise you to read the travel & health recommendations for Thailand issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in your home country.
    • Chulalongkorn University maintains a Health Service Centre that provides basic medical care for students and staff. An ambulance is also available to bring patients to nearby King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital should hospitalization be necessary. Incoming students are required to purchase adequate health insurance, covering their entire stay in Thailand, before leaving for Thailand!

  • Living expenses
    • We estimate that your living expenses will be around THB 15,000 per month (3 meals per day, transportation costs, and personal expenses), excluding accommodation and luxury items.

  • Accommodation
    • Subject to availability incoming students may stay at iHouse, which is located within walking distance to the Faculty of Economics. A list of private residences nearby is available here.

  • Visa
    • Before coming to Thailand, you must obtain a non-immigrant visa category ED from the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate in your country. Information about immigration matters is available on the website of the Department of Consular Affairs.

  • Buddy system
    • To help incoming exchange students in their adjustment to campus life in Thailand and the Thai culture, the EBA runs a buddy system in which visiting students are paired with our students. Buddies are also responsible for organizing an Orientation Day and a Welcome Trip, which is arranged on a cost-sharing basis, for incoming exchange students. You can meet your buddy through the exchange online portal.

  • Thai language course
    • We do not offer any Thai language courses for incoming visiting students, but there are numerous language schools in Bangkok that offer Thai language courses on a fee-paying basis.

  • Student uniform
    • Undergraduate students have to wear the following uniform when attending class, taking exams and using the university facilities:
      • Female students:
        • Shirt : with sleeves and collar, made out of pure white cloth with no design and of an appropriate thickness
        • Skirt : knee-length, made out of dark blue or black cloth with no design
        • Shoes : polite style, with a strap around the ankle
      • Male students:
        • Shirt : white with sleeves and collar, no design
        • Trousers : long, made out of black or dark blue cloth, polite style with no design
        • Socks
        • Shoes : dark dress shoes

  • Facilities
    • Libraries and Information Centres
      • Chulalongkorn University’s Office of Academic Resources houses the Central Library, the Audio-Visual Center, the Thailand Information Center, the International Information Center, the Art Center and the “Chulalongkorn University Global Development Learning Network”. In addition, there are 38 other libraries around the Chulalongkorn University campus, including the Economics Documentation and Information Centre (EDIC). EDIC provides the following services:
        • library (e.g. loan service for books, journals, research reports, as well as interlibrary loan service)
        • on-line research databases (CU Reference Database, CEIC Database) Central Library (CL)
        • various types of information services
        • Remote Access-VPN (Virtual Private Network)
      • Computer Service Centres at the Faculty of Economics
        • The computer service centres at the Faculty of Economics are located on the 2nd floor of the faculty building. The centres are equipped with modern computer hardware and up-to-date software.
      • Sport Facilities
        • Sport facilities include an open-air stadium with a capacity of 10,000 spectators, where major inter-faculty competitions are held. There are several gyms, a judo hall and a shooting range. Tennis courts, swimming-pools and various other outdoor sports facilities are accessible to students. The spacious green areas on campus are used by students for a variety of athletic activities.
      • Bookstore
        • The university bookstore operates on a non-profit basis and provides a wide range of magazines, periodicals, textbooks and other books, as well as accessories. It is located in the Sala PhraKieo Building.
      • Student Co-operative Store
        • The store offers consumer goods and student uniforms, provides a range of services and operates in three locations, namely Sala PhraKieo, student residence halls, and the Borommaratchakumari Building.
      • Shuttle bus
        • Chulalongkorn University provides a free shuttle bus service for students, faculty and staff. The shuttle bus service operates from Mondays to Saturdays (7am to 7pm). Click here to view the shuttle bus routes.
      • Restaurants
        • Several cafeterias, canteens, and small restaurants, offering modestly priced meals, are situated at various campus locations. They are open from early morning until evening.
      • Prices per (delicious) dish range from THB 30 to THB 50, prices for drinks (such as ice coffee or tea, fruit shakes) from THB 10 to THB 25.

  • How to get from the airport to the Faculty of Economics?
    • Metered taxis are available outside the terminal on the 1st floor. There is a THB 50 surcharge on the meter and trips to the city will cost around THB 400(plus a highway toll of about THB 75) and take around 40 minutes depending on the traffic. Additionally, flat-fare limousines are available in the arrival hall on the 2nd floor.
    • Alternatively, you may take the Airport Rail Link, i.e. the Suvarnabhumi Airport Express to Makkasan Station. At Makkasan Station, walk to the MRT station Phetchaburi and take the train to Sam Yan station. Click here for an MRT map.

Outgoing Students

Students are given the opportunity to study one or two consecutive semesters at a university of their choice, with which the we do not have a bilateral or multilateral student exchange agreement. A list of our partner institutions can be found here . Visiting students have to pay tuition as set by the host institution in addition to tuition and fees payable to Chulalongkorn University.
