Course Description :

International finance and new open economy macroeconomics; exchange rate behavior; international capital/financial market imperfections; balance of payment crisis; growth in open economies and policy coordination.

Instructor :

Prof. Jonathan Leightner, Ph.D.

What to expect?

Lectures will go significantly beyond what is given in the textbook.

Interesting topics taught, but not covered by the textbook, will include (1) Thailand’s financial crisis of 1997 and its aftermath, (2) financial crises in other countries, (3) the global glut of savings, (4) China and the international world.

Much of this course’s material will build towards a large country IS/LM/BP model which shows how two different large countries’ exchange rate regimes, macroeconomic policies, and international trade affect each other.

Two tests will be given which will require that students replicate key graphs and explanations and apply the economic models to recent news articles. Several examples of applying the models to past news articles will be given and the articles used for this semester’s exams will be distributed before the exams so that students can prepare them.
